SMART AND BRIGHT

(Short story for pupils)

Smart was a pupil who loved school. He was serious and hard-working, and always did his homework diligently. He knew the multiplication tables by heart before all his classmates did, and he was already writing words in English, when all the others were still struggling to learn the letters of the Alphabet. He was an outstanding and well-mannered pupil, who loved language, art, and music.                                                                                                             

Smart loved his family. He never wandered too far from home, and always told his parents where he was going. Bright , on the other hand, is not interested in his studies. Instead of doing his homework. He looked for birds' nests in the trees, and chased birds with his slingshot. He was hiding his schoolbag under a rock near the school, and didn't think about it all day long. Since they sat next to each other in class, Bright's behavior had some effect on Smart, who also began to neglect his homeworks. But he quickly mended his ways after a remark from their teacher, Rose.                                                 

One day Smart followed his friend, to hunt birds in the fields and orchards. Suddenly a stone struck his forehead, and he noticed blood on his shirt. He returned home crying. Lona Smart's mother, was upset, and went to the school along with Lola, Bright's mother. Both pupils were punished, and both since then were obedient and hard–working.                   

At the end of the school year Smart was the best student in the class, and Bright was second. They embraced, and were friends again, and the entire class sang:                                         

My school is my beacon

It lights my way to the future

Anyone who studies hard,

is my friend

I will do whatever

my parents tell me to do
